Ray Kennedy’s involvement in banking began early and lasted more than four decades. In 1955, he was elected a director of a small Hudson-based bank, beginning a continuous arc of financial leadership.

That institution later merged into the State Bank of Albany, which subsequently formed Norstar Bancorp, a publicly traded company. Norstar later merged with Fleet Financial Group, which itself would eventually merge with Bank of America.

Ray served as a director at each successive stage of these institutions, from local bank to regional and national financial organization, until he reached mandatory retirement age of 70 in October 1998. His longevity and continuity across multiple mergers reflected extraordinary trust in his judgment, institutional memory, and financial stewardship.

Philanthropy, Healthcare, Education, and Historic Preservation

Ray Kennedy’s civic and philanthropic leadership was as expansive as his business career.

Olana Historic Trust

In the early 1960s, Ray was the primary organizer of a coalition of local, state, and national leaders that led to Olana’s designation as a historic trust. He served as founding Chairman, playing a decisive role in preserving one of the Hudson Valley’s most important cultural landmarks.

Healthcare Leadership

Ray served as:

  • Chairman of Columbia Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees

  • Chairman of the Columbia Memorial Hospital Foundation

  • Trustee of the Columbia Memorial School of Nursing

His leadership helped stabilize and strengthen healthcare access for the region.

Siena College Leadership

Among Ray Kennedy’s most meaningful and enduring commitments was his service to Siena College in Loudonville, New York. Over many years, he served as a member of the College’s Board of Trustees and ultimately as Chairman of the Board, helping guide the institution through periods of growth and transformation.

Ray was not merely a trustee in title. He was one of Siena’s most dedicated advocates and fundraisers, generously contributing his time, talent, and resources to strengthen the College’s financial foundation and expand opportunities for future generations of students. His leadership, sound judgment, and ability to inspire confidence among alumni, benefactors, and community leaders made him an invaluable asset to the institution.

His commitment to higher education reflected a deeply held belief that educational opportunity has the power to transform lives. The same philosophy that later became evident in his private efforts to help young people attend college and begin successful careers was also reflected in his public service to Siena.

In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the College and to the broader community, Siena awarded Ray an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree, one of the institution’s highest distinctions. His years of leadership and service left a lasting impact on Siena College and helped strengthen its position as one of the region’s most respected institutions of higher learning.

Quiet, Personal Philanthropy

Ray was a member of the Columbia County Good Guys, an informal group of local leaders who made emergency, discreet donations to individuals and organizations facing sudden financial hardship. This quiet generosity reflected Ray’s belief that charity should be effective, timely, and often anonymous.

The Raymond C. Kennedy Foundation

Ray’s legacy of giving lives on through the Raymond C. Kennedy Foundation, which continues to provide humanitarian grants to individuals and organizations throughout Columbia and Greene Counties in upstate New York — a lasting expression of his commitment to community care.
